Helpful Tips

The following information will help you to help us to make your move as smooth and trouble free as we can.

Property Access

In order for us to be able to start your removal as quickly and smoothly as possible, it is essential that access is available for our vehicles. In cases where the removal vehicles will need to be parked outside your home rather than on a driveway, please ensure that the road outside your house is kept clear. You may need to speak to your neighbours to ensure that no cars are parked outside over night. In cases where there are parking bays outside your home, please ensure that you have the necessary permits to allow our vehicles to park outside whilst the removal takes place.

Please ensure that all pathways to your access door, and all internal passageways and staircases are kept clear.

In order to gain access to your new property, it is important to keep in contact with your solicitor or estate agent, and try to get the keys to the new property before they go to lunch!

Packing

Packing Service

If Keans Removals are providing a full packing service for you, then we will provide all materials necessary to pack your possessions for a secure and safe journey. These will include boxes, tape, bubble wrap and packing paper.

Self-pack

We will provide you with a range of packing materials for you to pack yourself. Our smaller boxes are provided for heavier items such as books, DVDs and china, and our larger boxes are provided for clothes, shoes, toys, pots and pans, and small cooking appliances etc.

Boxes should not be overfilled, in order that they can be stacked properly on the removal vehicles.

Once a box has been filled and sealed, it should be marked with the destination room and a description of what is inside the box.

Boxes containing fragile items should be marked accordingly, so that they can be placed on the top of stacks, and extra care can be taken when handling them.

Clothing

Clothes that are stored in small chests of drawers may be left in place, and will be transported in situ. Larger chests of drawers will need to be emptied.

We provide hanging wardrobes for suits, dresses, blouses and shirts etc. in order to prevent creasing during handling and transportation. Clothing such as jumpers, coats, linen and towels should be packed in our larger boxes.

Bedding

Bedding such as duvets can be packed in black plastic bags or our larger boxes. Bin liners should be marked in a similar way to boxes so that their contents and destination can quickly and easily be identified when unloading. All bin liners should be securely tied.

Dismantling Furniture

Large items of furniture, such as beds and wardrobes, should be dismantled ready for the day of the move. KEANS provide a dismantling and erecting service if required. Please contact us if you would like a quote for this service.

Cookers, Fridges, Freezers, Dishwashers and Washing Machines

All 'white goods' should be disconnected before we arrive to start your removal. We are unable to complete this task for you, due to our insurance not covering us for the disconnection of appliances, though we will of course give as much advice as we can if any problems should arise.

Freezers can remain on until just prior to removal, but the contents of fridges and freezers will be your responsibility to move on the day, so we suggest to run down the contents as much as possible before your removal date.

Garage contents and garden items

If possible you should move all items in the garden that are to be moved into one place, and keep these separate from those items that are to remain. This will enable us to load all garden items as quickly as possible. Any garden items that are heavily soiled should be cleaned. In addition, where possible, garden items should be kept under cover in order to prevent excess water from collecting in the event of rain.

Loft contents

All items from the loft that are to be included in the removal, should be brought down before the removal team arrive so that all items can be taken into consideration when organising the order in which items will be loaded onto the removal vehicles.

Items to be stored

Any items that are to be taken into storage should be kept separate from other items, and should also be clearly marked.

Inform people you are moving

Remember to inform all utilities that you are moving - you will need to ensure that you take gas, electricity and water meter readings where appropriate to ensure that you can properly close down your account for your old property.

It is a good idea to get your mail re-directed for a short time after you have moved. If any mail should still be addressed to your old address, you will still be able to receive this mail, and inform the sender of your change of address.

You should make sure that you contact your telephone provider well in advance so that your new line is ready for your removal date. BT can be contacted on 150.
